Frozen Daylight

Frozen Daylight

This is another photo from yesterday’s photo shoot. It was colder than the photo looks.
For this photo I took two pictures and merged them into one to make the panoramic photo. Each of the photos are a five frame HDR. The sun was setting fast so I had to hurry.

The specs
iso 200
24mm
f/22
Two separate shots photo merged
Each shot is five exposures

I like the ice cold blue color.
I like the orange and yellows mixed in the blues.
I like the sun as it is going behind the mountains.
I would like to have a little more reflection on the ice.

Last Light

Last light

I had a few more minutes again today to take a few pictures. I called my friend Jon from feflectedpixel.com and we headed down to the Utah Lake State Park boat Harbor. This was the same place I was last night. The difference as you can see is the lake is now frozen. A few minutes after we left I called time and temperature and found out it was twelve degrees. It was so cold that the snow almost felt warm on the feet. During this shoot I let Jon use my split level neutral density. He was having a blast with it. During this time I decided to only shoot HDR. This photo is a seven exposure HDR. After processing the photo I used a noise reduction program to clean it up just a bit.

The specs.
iso 200
24mm
f.22
7 exposures

I like the rocks covered in ice.
I like the sunset colors reflected in the ice on the rocks.
I like the solid path of gold from the rocks to the sun.

First Snow

First Snow

After two days of storms I was ready to get out and take some winter pictures. The clouds broke just before sunset so I headed down to Utah Lake. This was as colorful as it got. For some reason the reds never developed. This photo is a five exposure HDR. I shot the picture at iso 200 and f/13. The yellow and oranges on the lake are broken into sections. This is due to ice starting to form on the lake. Where there was no ice there is a nice reflection. When I left work to take the picture the air temperature was 16 degrees fahrenheit with a wind chill of 5 degrees. The wind was blowing much harder over the lake.

I like the snow in the fourground.
I like the reflection on the water.
I like the rocks separating the water from the snow.
I would like to have more or less of the tree.

Reflections

Reflections

This was a fun day. We decided to drive out to Cedar Fort where the Bald Eagle comes for the winter. I was busy taking photos of the Eagles as they were gliding in for the night. The sun was getting pretty low in the sky. I turned around and this was the photo I saw. I was so focused on the eagles that I forgot to adjust the f/stop. I learned a valuable lesson from this photo. You need to be prepared to make quick changes to your settings, and the best photo is not necessarily the photo you were looking for.

The specs
iso 200
70mm
f 2.8
1/400 second

I like how the stream moves in and out of the picture.
I like the reflection of the tree
I would like to reshoot this using a wide lens, tripod, and lower f/stop.

Frozen Stairs

Bridal Viel Falls

Today we received a cold blast directly from the Canada. With this cold air came a quick blast of snow. I thought for todays post I would post a local landmark, Bridal Viel Falls. Back when I was a teenager this was a local hot spot for weekend dances. A tram would take 6 people to the top at a time. In the small building on the top was a small building that on the weekends was used for dances. It was wiped out in a massive avalanche. During the winter months this area is a favorite for local ice climbing location.

I like the sheer cold of this photo.
I like the dark areas near the waterfall.
I would like to take this photo during when the sky is light with a nice sunset to see if some color from the sky might transfer to the ice.

This shot is a five shot HDR.
