Fire and Ice II
19/12/09 17:37 Filed in: HDR

Here is a second look at last nights sunset. This time I wanted the ice covered rock to be more prominent.
I like the intense colors of the sky.
I like the reflection in the snow covered water.
I would like to have the clouds have more character.
Let me know what you think.

Fire and Ice

I had just gotten off of work as the sun was setting. It has been several days since our last storm so the air quality had started to deteriorate. This made for the sun to appear as a large orange blob in the sky. I rushed home and then straight to the Lake. I just missed the sun. That was the best part of this sunset. I did however get to my destination right as this scene unfolded. This is the same place I took the photo of the frozen lake just over a week ago. Today the temperature was balmy. In the low 40’s
The specs
iso 200

7 exposures.
I like how the photo is divided in threes. Odd numbers are always good.
I like the cold snow and ice covered rocks.
I like the intens orange reflections.
I would like the clouds to have more depth.

Bridge
17/12/09 17:50 Filed in: Topaz

This was a fun picture to take. We were traveling on I-70 on our way to Denver. The colors were good in some places. In others they had fallen off the trees due to an extreme cold snap. With my small children in the back seat I was unable to stop the car to set up the camera for a good photo. Instead when I saw a photo I liked I stuck the camera out the window and took the snapshot. This one was taken at 80 miles an hour.
I processed it using my all time favorite plug in called Topaz Simplify.
The Specs.
Iso 400
135 mm
f/14
1/250 second
I like the color of the bridge.
I like the shape of the bridge.
I like the colors of the mountain.
I would like to take the time to photograph this picture using a tripod.

Upper Provo River Falls
16/12/09 19:55 Filed in: Water

This photo is one of my favorite. I awoke early in the morning to go to the Uinta Mountains to the Upper Provo River waterfalls. This is not the actual waterfalls, but it is near them. This photo is a perfect example of being prepared for what is there, but not what you were looking for. I had gone to take photos of the river and the main falls. After taking a few pictures there we started to hike above the falls. The trail was not very well defined, but the walking was easy. After a few hundred yards this was what appeared.
The Specs
A polarizing filter
48mm
f/22
1.3 second exposure
I like how the falls are the center of attention.
I like the color of the rocks.
I like the forest surrounding the river. It gives the river a sense of starting at the edge of the forest.
Let me know what you think.

Hidding Timpanogos
15/12/09 20:47 Filed in: HDR

This is another photo from yesterday’s sunset. This is just as the sun went behind the horizon. The snow covered mountain and clouds came to life with color. I would have added this to last nights pano, but there was an ugly road and other items between this mountain and the rest of the the mountains. This is again a seven exposure HDR shot at iso 200.
I like the intense color of the mountain and clouds.
I like the blues of the ice.
I like the rocks in the bottom of the photo.
I would like to have more of Timpanogos showing.

Winter Wonderland
14/12/09 19:39 Filed in: Winter

This Panoramic is 4 photos stitched together. Each photo is a 7 photo HDR. Doing the math this photo took 28 shots to put together. I went down to the same location that I did last week for the ice pictures. Actually I am on the same pier just a few hundred yards away. I took this photo seconds after the sun went behind the West mountains. Since it was a pano I had to move fast. The photo is a little softer then I would like. This is due to taking a business call right as I was setting up the camera. I forgot to set the aperture to maximize the depth of field. The call was the right thing to do as I was able to provide some help. There is always next time to get the perfect shot.
The specs
iso 200
50mm
f/5
Tripod assisted
I like the intense color of the sun reflected off the new snow.
I like the clouds hanging on to the tops of the mountains.
I like the reflections in the lake.
I would like a bit more depth of field.

Utah lake
13/12/09 20:54 Filed in: HDR

This photo was one of my first HDR attempts. It was also back when I was afraid to shoot anything in Raw. I saw that there was a good potential for a nice sunset, so I headed down to Utah Lake as quick as I could. This is a three exposure HDR. The processing of this photo produced a large amount of noise and a very distinct Halo around the clouds. After processing the photo I copied the correct sky exposure photo into photo shop and put it as a background layer to the HDR photo. I then erased the halo. Once this was done I merged down and ran a noise reduction software.
I like how the trees frame the mountain, grasses and sunset.
I like the action.
I like the color.
I now shoot all of these types of photos in Raw for greater color control.

Ice Cave
13/12/09 06:52 Filed in: HDR

This is another photo from Utah Lake. This one was a five exposure HDR. This little cave was on the opposite side of the direction of the waves. The ice formed from the water that spilled over the top. Because of the location of this to the ice below, and the equipment I took I was unable to get a better angle then what I had here.
The Specs
iso 200
70mm
f/7.1
I like the rich colors of the rocks.
I like the reflection of the ice in the corner.
I would like a bit more of the picture to be in focus.
Thanks for visiting. If you like what you see please come back and please share with your friends.
